Dirty Dancing musical’s Baby and Johnny are couple in real life as chemistry sizzles in Sunderland

No wonder the chemistry is sizzling in the city this week as the actors playing Baby and Johnny in Dirty Dancing at Sunderland Empire are a couple in real life.

The stage adaptation of the hit 1987 movie has made a triumphant return to theatres across the country after the lights went out on it and plenty of other shows due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Dirty Dancing kicked off its Sunderland run on Tuesday night, when ChronicleLive were in the audience to see Kira Malou and Michael O’Reilly do Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze proud in the roles that made them famous 34 years ago.

The energy between Kira and Michael on stage was absolutely electric as they told the story of Baby and Johnny’s unlikely love story during her family’s summer break to Kellerman’s holiday park.

As songs like Hungry Eyes, Cry To Me and of course Time of My Life sounded out around them, sparks flew between the pair on the Empire stage, with audience membersy left wondering if they were perhaps an item in real life as well.

Well the answer is yes. A glance at Kira and Michael’s Instagram accounts reveal that as well as playing a couple on stage, they are very much a couple off stage too and celebrated their two year anniversary next year.

In a sweet post to Kira, Dirty Dancing’s leading man Michael wrote: “Happy two year anniversary darling, I love you with all my heart and I am still having the time of my life.”

Sharing similar sentiments, Kira shared a picture of her and Michael, with the words: ” I can’t wait for another year with my best friend, soul mate and love!”

Fans have been lapping up Michael and Kara’s Johnny and Baby chemistry in Sunderland, as well as the show itself.

Tickets are still available to see it in Sunderland from ATG tickets.

Commenting on the show’s Instagram post, one fan wrote: “The show was amazing , well done everyone,” and another wrote: “We were their last night and you all were absolutely fab.”
