Find out how the North East fares in a UK map of trustworthy tradesmen

The UK cities with the least and most trustworthy tradesmen have been listed – and it’s not good news for the North East.

In all, 65 cities around the country were analysed across a range of professions and London came out on top followed by St Albans and Chelmsford.

The highest ranked city in the North East was Sunderland which came in at a mid table 37th place. Newcastle claimed 42nd spot and Durham was placed at 50th.

Finding trusted tradesmen has become such a problem that housing stock could be in a state of disrepair across regions of the UK, according to a report earlier this year.

Based on the Homeowner Survey from the HomeOwners Alliance and TrustMark, it found that more than half of homeowners (58%) said they had difficulty finding a trusted builder to help with repairs or improvements, with 12% of these people not doing the work and 26% delaying the project.

Some 40% carried out the repairs or DIY themselves, 27% did only the essential work and 28% used tradesmen they were uncertain about.

The research for this report was carried out by Heatingforce.co.uk who used a list of trades which included plumbers, electricians, builders, carpenters and joiners and plasterers and renderers.

They then looked at the amount of tradesmen in each city had a government approved TrustMark up to November 8 this year, added the number together and then ranked them.

Not surprisingly with the size of its population, London come out top with a total of 2,764 trustworthy tradesmen in all, followed by St Albans with 2,468 and Chelmsford with a total of 982.

In the North East, Sunderland had a total of 375 trustworthy tradesmen made up of 223 electrician, 30 plumbers, 15 plasterer and renderers, 37 carpenter and joiners and 70 builders.

In Newcastle, according to the report, there was a total of 293 made up of 179 electricians, 24 plumbers, 13 plasterer and renders, 25 carpenters and 52 builders.

Finally Durham had a total of 163, made up of 11 electricians, 30 plumbers, 15 plasterer and renders, 37 carpenters and 70 builders.

It could have been worse, however. In Aberdeen researchers found 21 trustworthy tradesmen, whilst Derry had 19 and Inverness was bottom of the table with 18.
