Full list of North East tip and recycling centre opening times this Easter

If you are planning to do a spring clear out or a spot of DIY over Easter, it might be useful to know when your local tip will be open.

We contacted all the local authorities in the North East to find out when their household waste recycling centres will be available. The good news is that they will be up and running over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Their opening times are given below. We have provided information about the days and hours the sites will be in operation, broken down by local authority area.

The following details are for Newcastle, Northumberland, Sunderland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Gateshead and County Durham. There are also website links for the councils, in case you need more information.

Some local authorities may require you to book a slot before visiting a recycling centre. The usual appointment systems will be running.

Recycling centre and tip opening hours over Easter weekend

Northumberland

In Northumberland, Household Waste Recovery Centres will be open from 8am to 7.30pm on all days over the weekend including Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. The following are open from 8am to 7.30pm seven days a week:

  • Alnwick
  • Ashington
  • Berwick
  • Blyth, Bebside

  • Hexham

And these centres are only open Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, including the Easter bank holiday weekend:

  • Allendale
  • Haltwhistle
  • Morpeth
  • Ponteland (Kirkley West Thorne)

  • Prudhoe (West Wylam)
  • Seahouses

  • Wooler

North Tyneside

In North Tyneside, the household waste recycling centre and tip in Wallsend Road, North Shields, will be open from 8am to 8pm every day over the Easter break. The usual appointment system will be operating.

This means, you must book an appointment in advance. Here is more information.

South Tyneside

In South Tyneside, the Recycling Village at Middlefields Industrial Estate, South Shields, is open every day from 9am to 6pm, including the Easter weekend. For cars, opening hours are from 9am to 6pm. Last entry is 5.45pm.

Residents need to book a slot through the council website here. Vans with a permit can book slots between 9.30am to 11am.

County Durham

In County Durham, during bank holidays, household waste recycling centres operate on weekend opening hours. This is mainly 9am to 6pm.

However, you can find a list of tips and the opening hours for each site here. You can also check how busy your recycling centre is on the website.

Sunderland

In Sunderland, household waste and recycling centres are open every day over Easter. You need to book an appointment slot to use the tip at Pallion. There will be no access without a booking.

The opening hours are 8am to 6pm daily. The address is Pallion Industrial Estate, European Way, Sunderland, SR4 6SN. More details are here.

Newcastle

There are three sites in Newcastle where residents can recycle waste and dispose of extra rubbish. These sites will be open every day over the Easter period. The details are:

Brunswick – Brunswick Industrial Estate, Sandy Lane, NE13 7BA. Opens Monday to Sunday 8am to 6pm.

Byker – Glasshouse Street, off Walker Road, NE6 1AH. Opens Monday to Sunday 8am to 6pm.

Walbottle – Walbottle Road, NE15 8HY. Opens Monday to Sunday 9am to 6pm.

Gateshead

You need to book a time slot for each visit to household waste and recycling centres in Gateshead. There are two – Campground household waste and recycling centre, Springwell Road, Wrekenton, NE9 7XW, and Cowen Road household waste and recycling centre, Cowen Road, Blaydon, NE21 5TW.

Both centres are open seven days a week, including over the Easter weekend. The timings are:

  • Monday to Friday – 9am to 5pm
  • Saturday and Sunday – 9am to 6pm
