Sunderland’s new multi-million pound Keel Crossing footbridge has officially opened. The £31 million landmark footbridge, linking the city centre with Sheepfolds and the Stadium of Light, formally opened at 1.30pm on Saturday.
The public unveiling took place in time for the thousands of SAFC supporters who were making their way to the Stadium of Light for Sunderland AFC’s match against Wolves. The bridge had a temporary opening on August 22, when Red Roses fans headed to the stadium for England’s opening match against USA in the Women’s Rugby World Cup.
Before kick-off, fans gathered at Keel Square as archive footage of SAFC was showcased on the Expo Sunderland Pavilion, accompanied by live entertainment and a chance to meet and greet former players. An SAFC fan parade – spearheaded by This Is Wearside – also set off from Keel Square.
The new landmark provides a spectacular view of the Wearmouth Bridge and a direct walking and cycling connection from the city centre to destinations including Sheepfolds Stables, Sunderland College’s new Housing Innovation and Construction Skills Academy (HICSA) and the Beacon of Light. To celebrate the opening of the Keel Crossing, supporters were also be able to get pints for 50% off at the Fire Station and Dun Cow during a 15-minute window.
