Tory MPs vote down move to slash VAT on household energy bills

A plan to slash VAT on energy bills has been blocked by Tory MPs, leading Labour to accuse the government of “breaking its promises” to the public.

Boris Johnson had previously promised “to scrap this unfair and damaging tax” on energy, but the prime minister ordered his MPs to reject such a move on Tuesday.

Labour’s plan, which was defeated by 319 votes to 229, would have seen VAT removed from domestic energy bills for a whole year, as well as the warm homes discount expanded.
