Sunderland school student flown to hospital after medical emergency

A school in Sunderland has confirmed one of its students had to be airlifted to hospital after suffering a medical emergency. The Great North Air Ambulance Service has also issued a statement after the helicopter attended St Anthony’s Girls’ Catholic Academy just before 1pm on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for St Anthony’s Girls’ Catholic Academy: “Update Medical Incident – a pupil suffered a medical emergency yesterday at school. The emergency services were called, and she was airlifted to hospital.

“She remains in hospital in a stable condition. We know our school community joins us in sending thoughts and prayers to her family at this difficult time. Thank you for your continued support.”

A Great North Air Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were activated to an incident at 12.37, our paramedic and doctor team arrived on scene at 12.49. They worked to treat the patient before flying the patient to hospital.”

On Tuesday, the North East Ambulance Service confirmed that it was called to the incident at a premises on Thornhill Terrace, and that two ambulance crews assisted the helicopter crew on the scene.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called to an incident at a premises, on Thornhill Terrace, Sunderland, at 12.21 on Tuesday, 8 July.

“We dispatched two ambulance crews and one clinical team leader to the incident, supported by our colleagues at the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS). One patient was taken to hospital by air.”

Northumbria Police has also confirmed that its officers also attended the scene to assist the other emergency services during the medical episode.
