The 91 Covid ‘blackspots’ in the North East – where cases are among the highest in the country

As Covid cases continue to rise across the country, 91 areas in the North East have been identified as having some of the highest case rates.

Despite Boris Johnson announcing stricter ‘Plan B’ restrictions on December 8, Covid cases have continued to rise rapidly as the Omicron variant spreads through the UK.

And now the government has added a new category to thecoronavirus data website for areas with the most severe case rates.

Areas which appear shaded in black have the highest case rates in the country, with more than 1,600 per 100,000 people testing positive for the virus.

Latest data shows there are currently 91 ‘blackspot’ areas in the North East for the seven day period ending on December 30, 2021.
