The list of top UK tourist attractions according to Tripadvisor sees a healthy North East presence and perhaps a surprise name from this region near the top.
It is drawn up according to traveller favourites on the website and in the first two places are the Tower of London and Tower Bridge in London, with Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh in third.
The highest placing for the North East was the Victoria Tunnel in Newcastle which claimed 16th spot. We say a surprise as, while we know it’s fantastic place to visit, it has a lower profile than other sites which appear further down the list.
It is a preserved 19th-century wagonway under Newcastle, stretching from the Town Moor to the River Tyne.
It was originally built to transport coal from Spital Tongues (Leazes Main) Colliery to the river and operated between 1842 and the 1860s.
The Tunnel was converted in 1939 into an air-raid shelter to protect thousands of Newcastle citizens during the Second World War.
Of the 1,912 reviews by visitors to it, a massive 1,623 gave it a five star rating while 249 gave it four stars. The tour guides were consistently highly praised and the consensus among people who visited it had a “brilliant time”.
It is staffed by volunteers from the Ouseburn Trust which tweeted: “We just discovered the Victoria Tunnel is rated 16th in @Tripadviosor list of top attractions in the UK
“It’s an honour to bring this recognition to our region! Thanks to our fantastic guides who help us keep the Tunnel & it’s stories alive.”
Next on the list of North East places was St James’ park at 87 which was described as a “must for every football lover”.
The home of Newcastle United was two places higher than the home of the England national team, with Wembley in 89th position.
Meanwhile Durham Cathedral was placed 133rd – higher than York Minster at 160.
