A woman spotted throwing away a cigarette end in Sunderland city centre has been fined £220.
Jessica Talbot, 22, must also pay £235 costs to Sunderland City Council, and a £34 victim surcharge.
Talbot was seen dropping the butt in Crowtree Road by an environmental protection officer on Thursday, October 15.
Council prosecutor Tony Southwick told magistrates in South Tyneside: “She was walking towards the Bridges shopping centre.
“She dropped her cigarette end and made no attempt to pick it up.”
Mr Southwick said Talbot was issued with a £150 fixed penalty notice but had failed to pay up despite being posted reminders.
Talbot, of Front Street, Sherburn Hill, Co Durham, failed to attend the hearing and magistrates found the case proven in her absence.
She was charged under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
Magistrates ordered her to pay the full amount of £489 within 14 days.
